瑞安两千统治时代,东山缆索铁道已存在。
1965年,2号线一期(台场-浑河)开通。 1969年,1号线二期(能见台-东山公园)、2号线二期(浑河-能见台)开通。 1975年,2号线支线(浑河-昌平桥)开通。 1976年,1号线支线(中目黑-船科学馆)开通。 1979年,2号线(浑河-能见台)段拆分为4号线。 1988年,1号线三期(滨海湾-木枝)开通。 1989年,3号线(客船港-东山公园)开通。 1993年,5号线(贤良-台场)开通。 1995年,6号线(渔港-天海)开通。 2000年,3号线(贤良-东山公园)段并入5号线,3号线二期(贤良-西湾)开通,3号线全线改为20米车。 2002年,东山缆索铁道进行更新。 2003年,4号线二期(能见台-船厂路)开通,并北延伸至港南台。 2006年,4号线部分车辆开始跨入2号线运营,形成“4-2直通车”,同时4号线开行线内急行。 2008年,木林城际地铁(木北-林萃港)开通,2009年改称S1线。 2012年,S2线(千束-东海)开通。 2014年,东海新区地铁(东海北-东晓)开通,2016年改称S3线。

1960年,1号线一期(木枝-能见台)借用国铁轨道开通,只在起点站与终点站与国铁分离。 1962年,1号线一期(木枝-能见台)在原址重新修了地下线,并加设车站。
